My Great-Grandmother

This is my great-grandmother on my mother's side of the family, in front of her childhood home in Kentucky. Her name was Easter, born on Easter Sunday, 1998. She was Sam's oldest sister.

I loved my great-grandmother, and still feel very lucky to have known her and to have been there to hear her stories of growing up in the turn of the 20th century. She was such a wonderful storyteller.

I count her as one of the people I admire most. She was decades ahead of her time. She was not a stay-at-home mom, preferring to work at various retail establishments downtown. She eventually owned her own grocery store on the fifties. She didn't let anyone tell her she couldn't do something because she was a woman. She found ways to work around barriers. She really wasn't a feminist though she was completely apolitical. Her motivation wasn't women's rights, but her rights.

You can read more about her here!
