The rain build in intensity as the afternoon wears on. Some of these thunderstorms can be very intense, often generating high winds (sometimes as much as 70 mph/110 kph) and flash flooding in the arroyos.

If the thunderstorms begin early enough, wave after wave of thunderstorms may arrive, each thunderstorm created from hot moisture from areas of the desert floor which are not cloud-covered. As these thunderstorms are highly localized (only a few square miles in size), there are always desert locations nearby which continue to be heated by the hot sun in order to maintain the formation of more storms throughout the day.
